Qld: Man arrested after hostel fire faces court tomorrow
BRISBANE, Aug 17 AAP - A man captured by police after the Childers backpacker hostel
fire will make his first court appearance since being arrested tomorrow.
Tight security is being organised at Bundaberg Magistrates Court for the appearance
of Robert Paul Long, 37, who faces an attempted murder charge.
Long was captured by police in bushland at Howard, near Childers, five days after the
blaze at the Palace Backpackers Hostel that killed 15 tourists, most from overseas.
He was shot in the arm after allegedly stabbing a policeman in the face when he was
tracked down in bushland.
Long underwent surgery after the incident and was later charged with attempted murder
of the officer.
He was flown to Brisbane where he has been kept in custody pending tomorrow's court appearance.
Long was not charged over the hostel fire.
